A screen shot from BBC TV news today shows a North Korean voter bowing before the electoral authorities as he prepares to deposit his ballot in Sunday’s local elections.

The ballot, according to BBC, contains the name of a single candidate nominated by the ruling communist party. If a voter wants to vote against this candidate, he must tear the ballot before dropping it into the ballot box. Somehow, I am guessing that rather few citizens of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea exercise that option.
