The Prime Minister of Iceland, Geir Haarde, has resigned, paving the way for early elections. One is almost tempted to say that the government was “overthrown,” given the scale of protests over the country’s economic implosion. In fact, the protests turned violent this week, and are said to be the worst the country–which in 2007 topped the UN Human Development Index–has seen in around fifty years.
Elections will be in May, just one year two years since the election of the current parliament.

Actually, the last election was held two years ago, in 2007. My website’s Iceland page has more information on that election and Iceland’s proportional representation electoral system; I also covered the 2007 election here.
At any rate, CNN reports that Iceland’s Minister of Commerce has resigned – and for good measure, he also fired the head of the country’s financial supervisory authority before leaving office.
I must say the whole situation is quite reminiscent of Argentina during its economic meltdown back in 2001-02. I wonder, how do you say “¡Que se vayan todos!” in Icelandic?

Yes, 2007 to 2009 is two years. Maybe I was thinking we were in 2008! Thanks for the correction, Manuel.
I also noted that I planted this in “wide open spaces,” which really is meant to be the miscellaneous block (neither FRUITS, nor VOTES). Maybe there I was thinking of the wide open spaces of the North Atlantic, where Iceland now appears quite adrift, sadly.
I am not sure ‘Baltoscandia’ fits well for Iceland, but it is the best I can do. (Baltoscandia is meant to refer to the Baltic nations, including Finland, as well as Scandinavia. Iceland is closer to the Americas,* and as Manuel notes, perhaps the country has developed an unfortunate economic kinship with parts of that world region.

* Assuming Greenland is part of the Americas, and not (Balto-)scandia!

You’re welcome. By the way, the BBC reports that Iceland’s government has collapsed – just like in Argentina when things got really ugly in late ’01, I may add.

Yes, the previous reported resignation of the PM was to be effective after the early elections. Now the coalition government itself has broken up, which I assume means a caretaker will be in place through the elections and formation of a new cabinet.
Of course, such break-ups are far more “routine”–even if this crisis if anything but–in a semi-presidential system such as that of Ireland than in a presidential system such as Argentina’s.

Perhaps any confusion about the election date was due to the fact that there was a presidential election (sort of) in Iceland last year. The incumbent, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, was not challenged, so no popular vote took place, but, technically at least, there was an election last year.
