Three exit polls suggest that, as expected, Pepe Mujica has been elected President of Uruguay.
According to Factum, Mujica polled 51.2% of the vote, while Cifra put the figure at 51.5%, and Equipos Mori put the figure at 50.1%. Lacalle secured 44.9%, 44.4% and 46.2%, respectively.
Turnout was reported to be high despite the intermittent rain. Voting is obligatory for those Uruguayans who are registered to vote.
If the numbers in these polls are right, Mujica didn’t exactly pick up many votes between rounds!
But a majority is a majority, and obviously the reported numbers allow for some voided ballots (meaning Mujica’s majority of valid candidate votes is a bit higher, albeit still fairly narrow.)
