Until the 1970s, the Liberals were seen as closer to the Tories than to Labour, at there was much concern of two parties splitting the right wing vote and letting the Socialists in! The Tory victory in 1951 owed much to an electoral pact with the Liberals and by some accounts Churchill proposed a merger, though this may have been due to Churchill’s background as a Liberal politician the fact is that the two parties were close enough to make this conceivable.
