I have fallen behind in my elections of March reporting!
Benin’s presidential election, the first round of which I noted, both in setting the stage and in the result, has now been completed.
The runoff (result via Adam Carr) was not much of a contest:
-
Boni Yayi, 74.5%
Adrien Houngbédji (Social Democratic Party), 25.5%
Remarkable: Yayi more than doubled his first-round share, while Houngbédji’s vote share was essentially unchanged between the two rounds. It is very rare for one candidate in a runoff to receive virtually all the support of the first-round losers.
More from the BBC, which notes, without elaboration, that outgoing President Mathieu Kerekou “ignored a constitutional court ruling to postpone the run-off for three days.” Also at The Head Heeb.
