UPDATE: See the comments for an update by Lewis, and a discussion of state elections in Australia by Alan. Thanks to both of them!
Continuing my series on the elections of March, which has been a big one for election-watchers, I offer this BBC link on the first state elections in Germany since the formation of the federal grand coalition late last year.

Later results (via Bloomberg) seem to show that the Grand Coalition parties did very well. In Baden-Wurttemberg (a prosperous state where the CDU traditionally do well) the incumbent CDU got a good result, one short of an overall majority, while the SPD won an overall majority in Rheinland-Pfalz. In Sachsen-Anhalt the incumbent CDU-FDP coalition seems short of a majority and the outcome may be a CDU-SPD coalition there too. The FDP will be out of power in RPf and maybe S-A – and although it should stay in government in B-W the CDU will talk to the Greens (who did quite well). These changes may help the Grand Coalition in the Bundesrat.

The states of South Australia and Tasmania held general elections a week ago. Both are small states and the Australian Labor Party retained government with a strengthened majority in both. Tasmania is interesting because their lower house has 5 districts, each returning 5 MPs by STV.
